Stephen Ausherman
artist statement

In 2018 I began my career in Art Therapy and Counseling.

For what it's worth now, this is what I was doing with art before that:

I work with digital video and interactive media to examine characteristics of places, primarily natural
parks and wilderness areas. I’m interested in everything that defines a place, its ecology, cultural
history, and dilemmas between preservation versus public access. I strive to present issues in
innovative ways to foster new and memorable connections between people, nature and art.

Video art is my alternate mode of expression, the abstract counterpart to my literary-journalistic
approach to interpreting the impact of culture on landscape. Both methods stem from the same field
research, but video art is the extension where I can address the intangible elements—preconceived
notions, experience, memory and nostalgia—that influence perceptions of outdoor spaces.
